Know-how you need to succeed

Attention Clothing Retailers

Want to know what shoppers want from your store? BIGresearch, LLC, just found out. In a survey released in January 2004, consumers identified the top five features that motivate them to shop at an apparel store:

  1. Right price and good quality

  2. Ability to find a variety of items in a particular size

  3. Easier to find items in the store

  4. Clothing neatly displayed and hung on racks

  5. Having a style that represents "me"

Ditch Old Inventory

Moving out old inventory to make way for the new has customarily meant deep discounting for small-business owners. But before you decide to take a loss on old merchandise, take a look at eBay. List some of your inventory items on the Web site, www.ebay.com, and you might find you can get full price or more by auctioning your leftovers. You’ll need nifty pictures to post with your items. And you’ll need to determine realistic shipping costs before you offer your stuff for sale. But the online sale may bring in more bucks than putting a “clearance” sign on your in-house inventory.
