How To Choose A Franchise
Article 2: Are You Franchise Material?

Before analyzing whether franchising is for you, ask the threshold question, “Are you the kind of person franchisors want?”

If you aren’t, steer clear of franchising.

One of the benefits of franchises is that they are essentially turnkey operations, with modes and schemes already laid out almost cookie-cutter style. It’s nearly a business-startup-for-dummies approach. Follow the instructions; adhere to the plan. The details are taken care of, pre-fab style.

But one size does not fit all. For some people, a franchise can be an uncomfortable squeeze.

Many franchisors look for a franchisee that is:
  • A self-starter with leadership qualities

  • Self-disciplined and able to get along with others

  • Willing to accept management direction from the franchisor

  • Willing to comply with all contract provisions

  • Physically and emotionally equipped to assume responsibility, while simultaneously agreeing to be restricted in your management authority

  • Willing to sacrifice in the short term to achieve long-term benefits

  • Skilled at operating a business, and if not, willing to do acquire those skills

  • Experienced at business management
