Try some of these tips to squeeze more productive minutes out of your workday:
1. Group routine chores. By bunching these tasks together, you’ll save time.
Set aside time each day to return calls, return e-mails, read publications, pay bills, do online research
Mark out time on you calendar to work on big projects, such as a direct mail campaign or putting your business plan together
Make a list of your errands (pick up office supplies, make bank deposit, buy stamps) before you leave the office
2. Make the most of high-energy times:
Are you a morning person? Work on your most important projects as soon as you hit the office. Afternoons best for you? Hold the hard stuff until after lunch.
Some days are better than others. If you’re enjoying a spurt of energy, spend the day tackling chores that require your concentration and creativity. If you’re suffering a down day, tend to routine tasks.
3. Interruptions are time killers. Avoid them with these tips:
Close your door, whether you’re in a home office or an office building. For home-office workers, let your family know when and when not to interrupt. Clue your neighbors into your work routine and set boundaries.
Don’t let the lure of e-mail draw you to the computer every five minutes. That just interrupts your work flow. Set aside time for being online, then get offline and handle other tasks.
Let voice mail pick up the calls.
Don’t interrupt yourself by jumping from project to project. Set aside a specific number of hours to work on a project. Stick to it.
