Franchise Versus Independent
Article 1: Is Franchising For You?

The answer depends on many factors, some of which may surprise you.

For example, you may be a gourmet cook and have always wanted to run your own restaurant. But as a franchise restaurant operator, you’ll have little opportunity to fulfill a life-long dream of whipping up creative, one-of-a-kind dishes.

Instead, you’ll make and sell someone else’s recipes. The franchise will dictate virtually every detail of every entrée and dessert, requiring all be prepared uniformly so patrons eat at your restaurant exactly what is served at all the franchisee’s dining spots.

Perhaps you’ve always wanted to be your own boss and think franchising is the opportunity to do that. You may want to think again.v Most franchise operators more closely resemble middle managers in a corporation than they do sole proprietors running their own small business. Nearly every decision is dictated in many franchise systems. For the most part, you pass on orders from on high.

The next sections of this seminar will help you weigh these facts and others to determine whether franchising suits you, or if instead you may be happier owning your own, independent business.

Each option has its costs and benefits. You may be willing to trade off higher start-up costs for the security of having a turnkey franchise system that’s proven successful. Or, you may find regimentation crimps your style and prefer the unrestricted ability to improvise as an independent business owner.
