When franchising took off in the 1980s, restaurants dominated. Chains like McDonald’s, KFC and Subway Sandwiches used franchising to open tens of thousands of units across the globe.

But increasingly, companies are selling franchises that can be operated from home, such as business coaching, dog training, handyman services and student tutoring.

Thanks to technology and the rise of the service industry, a growing percentage of the more than 2,300 companies in 75 different industries that sell franchises allow some or all operations to be run from home.
