Is Your Small Business A Success?
Article 2: How to Recognize Your Personal Values

A successful business is one that allows you to express your personal values in a creative way.

Before you can achieve true success in business, then, you must know your personal values. And you can only discover them by looking within.

Not all of us are accustomed to such deliberate reflection. We can learn how, though, and we can start by putting pencil to paper. Making a written record of your values will help you remember them in good times and bad.

“I recommend people write down their values in each important area of their lives,” advises Kathleen Barton, president of The Success Connection in Colfax, Calif. “Writing them down helps you achieve them,” she explains. “The more specific you are in describing your goals, the better.”

What areas of your life should you address? The answer varies for each individual. In coming up with your own, try using Barton’s list as inspiration. Here it is:
  • Faith

  • Family

  • Friends

  • Others

  • Health

“My own personal mission statement outlines what is most important to me,” explains Barton. “Ultimately it is a guide I use to maintain a healthy balance in life, keeping my priorities in perspective.

“My first priority is God, and having a personal relationship with my Lord and Savior,” says Barton. “Then I want to be loving and encouraging to my family members. Third, I want to have challenging work where I make a positive impact on others. Fourth, I try to be a good, dependable friend. Finally, I want to take care of myself in order to maintain good physical and emotional health.”

Try to create a personal mission statement of your own. Express yourself in a form with which you feel comfortable.

“You need not write your mission statement in language,” adds Barton. “It could also be expressed as a picture, a collage or a poem. Get creative with it. If it’s personal and meaningful, it will motivate you.”
