Eldercare Help For The Self-Employed
Article 1: Facts About Eldercare

About a third of the nation’s population is 60 and older. Of that nearly 100 million, 58 percent need eldercare, according to the Department of Health & Human Services Administration on Aging. That’s why one in five U.S. households is providing informal care to one or more elderly persons.

What’s eldercare? Any health condition limiting personal independence qualifies. So do cognitive impairments, like Alzheimer’s, and even emotion conditions rendering the elderly incapable of caring for themselves.

The proportion of the aged population continues to mushroom. In 1900, only 7 percent of people in their 60s had one living parent. Today, that number is 49 percent, according to the Journal of Financial Service Professionals.

The difficulty is not merely choosing what institution to put grandpa in. The difficulty is that grandpa may be better off moving in with you, or at least might require your personal attention regularly.

“Millions of Americans are taking on the heavy burden of family care-giving without acknowledging the magnitude of those burdens on every aspect of their lives,” according to the National Family Caregivers Association. Those burdens are exacerbated if you are simultaneously running a business.

If this is hitting home, know that you are not alone. The anger, guilt, frustration and impatience you feel are normal. But there is hope.
