How To Expand Your Small Business
Article 1: Expansion Tips

The better job you’ve done of starting and establishing your small business, the easier it will be to expand.

A solid foundation allows you to apply what you know works to new scenarios and locales. Still, if not handled properly, expansion can derail the steadiest small business.

Before you jump to new neighborhoods or new shores, take these tips:
  • The simpler the task, the greater your chance of success, so don’t multitask.

    If you operate a clock repair business, don’t open new clock repair shops in far-flung locations and add antique clock sales at the same time.

    Either option by itself poses challenges enough. But when simultaneously adding new locations and new, unrelated product offerings, the increased burden certainly will be greater than the sum of the parts.

  • Expansion means not only more to do, but when expanding geographically, it also means more people doing what you normally do.

    One of the advantages of expansion is that you don’t have to do it all any more. One of the disadvantages of expansion is that you don’t get to do it all any more. If you can’t accept that, don’t expand.

  • Be willing to relinquish some control to others. Either that, or you’ll soon be overwhelmed by the realities of geography. Not even you can be in two places at once.
