Avoid Home Business Mistakes

Article 1: Work Habit Slipups
One of the first things an entrepreneur is likely to notice about setting up shop in the home is that work habits matter. Big time.
Welcome to Responsibility 101, the first on-the-job lesson for any home business entrepreneur. As every successful home-based small business operator learns sooner or later, it can be a big mistake to be lax or reactionary, waiting for circumstances or for others to dictate your schedule.
Entrepreneurs, by nature, are self-starters and full of initiative. That means, if you set up shop in your home expecting someone else to set your agenda, you’ve made your first big mistake.
There was a time when advertising pitches touted the allure of working at home by targeting the slothfully inclined.
“The reason you don’t see those old advertisements about people walking into their home office to work in their pajamas is because the people who had that kind of attitude didn’t succeed,” says Gene Fairbrother, a micro-business consultant for the National Association of Self-Employed (NASE).
Self-discipline is integral to any successful home-based business. Don’t make the mistake of being laid back and reactive. Be aggressive and proactive.
“There are numerous obstacles to successfully working out of your home. For example, endless numbers of unplanned obstacles that take us away from our work and prevent us from achieving our objectives,” says Jack B. ReVelle, vice chair of the Orange County, California, chapter of SCORE.
Start by developing a daily routine that requires you to regularly perform certain tasks without exception. Of course, you needn’t become a slave to your routine. You always can change it to better accommodate your goals. After all, you are the boss.
But self-discipline and a regular routine can help jump-start your business every day. They can also be critical for screening out the innumerable distractions that threaten to interfere with getting the job done.
