Avoid Home Business Mistakes
Article 7: Growth Bungles
Don’t sabotage your company’s growth.

The comfort level of a home-based business can be a velvet coffin. Working from home probably is comfortable for you, if nothing else. The confines are not particularly confining, and the atmosphere is, well, homey.

When things are comfortable, it’s tempting to become complacent and willing to settle for less. When things go badly, it’s easy to be mollified by the familiar surroundings of your home, which you might begin to regard as your sanctuary.

Avoid such comfy killers.

“Don’t loose your drive!” urges Gene Fairbrother, a micro-business consultant for the National Association of Self-Employed (NASE). “Millions of people operate successful businesses out of their home and many make a very nice living at it. Being in business no matter where you operate it from is likely to be filled with highs and lows. When you hit one of the lows, find ways to get yourself motivated to get back on track.”

But also consider the flip side. Don’t be tied down.

A home-based business may be your lifelong dream, but no dream lasts forever. If you find yourself awakening from the dream, don’t be afraid to revise your plans.

As Fairbrother notes, “While some people do very well operating out of the home, others need commercial surroundings to motivate them.”

If you find after a reasonable effort that you cannot maintain the high level of passion or devotion in a home office environment, change may be called for.

“Many people find that they can be much more successful working out of an office suite situation versus the home office,” Fairbrother says. “Also, as your business grows or you take on employees, know when it’s time to move out of the home for more commercial-style digs.”

Growth is the objective of any business. If you’re satisfied with the status quo, you might rethink the idea of self-employment. You may be better suited to work for someone else, who will dictate your responsibilities and assignments.

But if your personal desire is to strive to be your own boss, to have control over your work and a more direct hand in shaping your future, then you owe it to yourself to give the home office option a genuine effort.

That means avoid costly mistakes. When you do, you almost certainly will see your business grow.
