Employee Ethics

Small-business employees face ethical dilemmas every day. It’s your job as the boss to ensure integrity in the workplace and to encourage ethical behavior. Here are three ways to do just that, offered by the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants:

  1. Develop a code of conduct (also called a code of ethics) that addresses your company’s practices. Include issues such as client confidentiality, customer privacy, personal use of business property, harassment and diversity.

  2. Train your employees in ethical behavior. Use real-world situations to raise awareness of ethical dilemmas and resolutions. Encourage employees to ask questions and voice concerns.

  3. Communicate. Reward examples of ethical behavior and publicize them to your employees.

Be Helpful

In a 2006 survey conduced by the Mystery Shopping Providers Association (MSPA) nearly 85 percent of mystery shoppers surveyed said the mood and helpfulness of the sales associate impacts how much money they’re willing to spend in a retail store. “This survey reveals a need for retailers to ensure their sales associates are providing the best shopping experience possible,” said John Swinburn, MSPA Executive Director. To make sure your sales associates are winning the hearts of shoppers, try these tips:

  • Train your employees about product offering so they can make recommendations to shoppers

  • Train your sales employees in presentation – from the way they greet customers to how they upsell customers on related products

  • Encourage sales employees to get to know – and greet – your regular customers by name
