Nifty ideas you can use to build a better
business
Just The Stats
The next time you send a press release about your small business to the media, don’t forget to include a list of statistics, or stats. Publications frequently put stats in information boxes that accompany the main article, so keep them short, sweet and fun. You can use stats from your business or those provided by industry associations. Some ideas:
If you own a retail gift shop and send a press release about preparations for the holidays, include some sales stats from the previous year, such as the number of holiday cards sold, number of holiday stockings sold, number of candles sold, etc.
If you own a lawn care service, you could send a press release about how consumers can care for their landscapes during the cold winter months. Include stats about the number of different kinds of mulches available, how much consumers spent on landscaping in the past year, how many days of below freezing weather your area experiences, and so on.
Reference Check
Before you hire an employee, you always check his or her references. Do the same before you hire an independent contractor. Web designers, IT professionals, graphic artists and other freelancers should provide you with a list of professional references. The references should include a brief description of the type of work the contractor performed for the clients. Call at least half of those references to find out if the contractor completed the project on time, on budget and to the client’s satisfaction.
