Blasted By Bloggers?

If bloggers get angry and verbally attack your small business, how should you respond? An online poll conducted this year by the Dallas chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) didn’t find a clear answer:

  • 46 percent of respondents said bloggers should be ignored or managed by customer relations departments

  • 42 percent said bloggers should be handled by media relations representatives

“The results are surprising, especially since bloggers are gaining prominence as valid media outlets and/or story sources for mainstream media,” says Roy Miller, president of Dallas/IABC. “Treat bloggers with the same respect and responsiveness you’d have for any member of the media.”

Healthy Employees

Offering a few inexpensive wellness perks could help your employees stay healthier and more productive. But the benefits don’t end there. Wellness perks also boost morale and reduce absenteeism. Some ideas:

  • Offer a $50 or $100 rebate for employees who pay for annual health club memberships

  • Sponsor weight loss contests and give the winners movie tickets or gift certificates

  • Buy a machine so employees can check their blood pressure; anyone who lowers their pressure during a quarter gets a free lunch

  • Give rebates to employees who pay for smoking cessation programs or to those who buy nicotine patches in an effort to quit smoking
