Make A Million

Women entrepreneurs can get some serious business help from Make Mine A Million. Launched in 2006, the initiative supports the growth of women-owned businesses with less than $1 million in revenue. The program’s goal is to create 1 million women-owned businesses with at least $1 million in revenue by the year 2010. Want to be part of that? Find out if you’re eligible by visiting the Web site. You could receive financial help as well as comprehensive business mentoring. The initiative was started by Count Me In for Women’s Economic Independence and OPEN from American Express.

Voice Of Experience

“People who want to start and operate their own businesses today don’t have to repeat the same mistakes others have made,” says Ruth King. She speaks from experience. King is a seasoned entrepreneur who has owned seven businesses during the past 25 years. And now King has put her knowledge into a book, “The Ugly Truth About Small Business” (SourceBooks, 2005). The book recounts 50 actual business disasters, from worst-case scenarios to “never-saw-it-coming” avalanches. Its no-holds-barred approach teaches entrepreneurs and would-be entrepreneurs to consider, handle and/or avoid situations such as:

  • No one showed up

  • I lost 25 percent of my business in one day

  • We trusted the wrong people

  • I got sick and couldn’t work

  • And many more
