Know-how you need to succeed
Credit Checks
Pulling a credit report on clients that are
likely to run a big tab is standard operating
procedure for businesses. But, before you run
a credit check on a customer, get familiar
with the Fair Credit Reporting Act and credit
laws governed by your state. For instance, you
need to notify a client before you request her
credit report. If you deny credit to a
customer, you need tell him why. You also need
to give the customer the phone number and
address of the credit-reporting agency that
provided the negative information.
Return Policies
Some states and many cities require
businesses to post their return policies in a
public place. Failure to display your policies
can mean that customers retain the right to a
full cash refund. Here’s how you can save
yourself some hassles:
-
Post your policies near the cash register.
Don’t tape up a mess of handwritten warnings.
Have a single display that neatly conveys your
messages.
-
Word your policies politely. Instead of
saying “No cash refunds,” state that “We
gladly accept merchandise returns within 30
days for store credit.”
-
Many customers still write personal checks
for purchases. Make it easy for them by
posting your check acceptance standards. For
instance, your display might read, “We’re
happy to accept checks from customers with two
forms of identification.”
