Know-how you need to succeed
Ask Before You Mail
When you collect business cards at networking
events, don’t automatically add those names to
your mailing list for e-mail newsletters or
other marketing communications. Instead, send
a personal note or e-mail to the person asking
if he or she wants to be included on your
mailing list. This gives you an opportunity to
make personal contact. It also gives
recipients an opportunity to opt-out of your
mailings. Besides, asking permission is just
good business practice.
Don't Click To
Remove
Many spammers offer a “remove” or
“unsubscribe” link in their e-mails. You may
be tempted to click the link in an effort to
stop the flood of unwanted e-mails. But the
experts say that’s not always a smart move. It
seems spammers often use your “unsubscribe” or
“remove” response to validate your e-mail
address. They then keep using your address,
sell it to another spammer or both.
However, there are times when it’s safe to
unsubscribe. You can remove your name from an
opt-in list, such as an e-newsletter that no
longer serves your needs. You can also safely
unsubscribe from the lists of organizations or
companies that you trust.
