Nifty ideas you can use to build a better business

Spice Up Sales Copy

When writing a sales letter, business brochure or other marketing piece, use these tips to grab a potential customer’s attention. Choose active words. Instead of writing “we provide. . .,” use “we deliver. . .” Always write in the present tense to create a sense of immediacy. Replace formal words with those that convey a casual tone. For instance, instead of using the word “initiate,” use “start.” Contractions also give sales copy a more conversational style. Never clutter your copy with technical terms or industry jargon. Convert those words and phrases into common words that every reader clearly understands.

Motivate Employees -- Now

When an employee goes beyond the call of duty, recognize, praise and reward the good deed immediately. The sooner you respond to an employee’s positive action, the more motivation you’ll provide. If a bookkeeper catches an incorrect invoice before it’s overpaid, offer a free lunch that day. Or tell him to take the afternoon off. If an employee calms a complaining customer and saves the sale, offer a bonus that’s a percentage of the sale. Maybe an employee comes up with a top-notch idea that streamlines procedures or decreases expenses. Give more than a pat on the back. Offer to send the employee to a professional development seminar that will build on her ideas. Or reward her initiative by giving her additional job responsibilities—and an accompanying pay raise.
