Leasing a computer might be the right financial move for your small business. But don't assume that leasing will relieve you of all the technological headaches. When you lease a machine, you choose the warranty. If the computer crashes after the warranty expires, you dish out the dough to fix it. And you must still make the monthly lease payment. Even if the matching breaks while under warranty, don't expect first-class treatment from the manufacturer. Leasing doesn't guarantee special consideration -- or extra fast repairs.

Before you hire an investigator for employment screening, check his or her references. And ask the right questions. For instance, find out how an investigator gets his information about your potential employees. Ask how the investigator verifies that the information is current. If she won't reveal her sources, find another investigator. Also ask about the scope of the investigation. Some simply verify Social Security numbers. Others delve into a long list of public records. Thorough investigators earn their fees by knowing what to look for and where to look. Be sure you and the investigator understand how much -- or how little -- employment screening you're paying for.
