Solo Advice

Independent service providers who need to navigate tax and legal issues have a new resource from attorney Stephen Fishman. Fishman’s book Working for Yourself: Law & Taxes for Independent Contractors, Freelancers & Consultants (Nolo Press, 2002) delivers a wealth of valuable information. Now in its 4th edition, the book has been completely updated to include topics such as nondisclosure agreements, retirement plans and health insurance deductions. Fishman is an independent contractor, so he knows the ropes. And in this book, he shows you how to:
  • Avoid unfair contracts

  • Create good agreements

  • Comply with IRS rules

  • Set up offices inside or outside of your home

  • Establish sound business relationships

Just The Stats

To write a killer business plan you need data—numbers, figures and statistics that are often hard to find. The Small Business Administration’s Office of Advocacy can help. The “Small Business Profiles by State” delivers information about small businesses within each state. Each profile includes data on:

  • Growth of small businesses
  • Number of businesses
  • Number of jobs created
  • Revenues generated
  • Women and minority-owned businesses
  • Number of banks by asset size class
  • Business turnover

The complete set of state reports, which includes the District of Columbia, is available online at www.sba.gov/advo/stats/profiles.
