Know-how you need to succeed

Don’t Tote The Note

Unless you operate the local bank, think twice before extending credit to customers. Deadbeat clients can crush your profits. Instead, clearly explain your payment policies in a letter that you give to every new customer. State your payment terms, including deposit requirements. Serious customers will fully understand the reasons for your payment policies. Customers who object are looking for you to carry them. Don’t do it. Being a nice guy can cost you.

Long-Distance Savings

The next time your long-distance telephone bill arrives, look at the fine print. Check the information about billing increments. Many long-distance companies bill in one-minute increments. That means if you make a 30-second call, you’re still charged for one minute of long distance time. A plan that bills in six-second increments will save you money over the long haul.

For instance, you make a call or send a fax that lasts 24 seconds. With six-second billing, you’ll pay only for those 24 seconds. With one-minute billing, you’ll pay for a whole minute. If you make a 25 second call, one-minute billing will still charge you for one minute of usage. But on a six-second billing plan, you’ll only be charged for 30 seconds.
