Local Talent

If your small business is looking to hire local talent, bypass the big Internet job sites and go straight to your local newspaper. Most newspapers now have online Web sites. So you can place a classified ad in the print and online editions. And many papers let you create your ad right online. Obviously, your local paper won’t reach as many job candidates as, say, Monster.com. But, if you want an onsite worker and don’t want to pay relocation expenses for a new employee, then hiring local is the way to go, and newspapers fit the bill.

Heat Up Cold Calls

Before you pick up the phone to call a potential customer, send a short, useful introductory note to prospects. It will lay the groundwork for your phone call. If you sell consulting services, send a quick industry overview to buoy your credibility. If you sell products, mention an individual product you offer for the prospect’s specific industry. You can send the introductory note via e-mail or snail mail. Always tell prospects that you’ll follow up with a phone call in a few days. Then deliver on your promise.
