Hiring Rules

Before you run a background check of any kind on a job applicant, make sure you get the applicant’s permission. In writing, tell the applicant exactly what the check will cover. Explain what information you’re going to search for. Also be specific about whom you intend to contact and what questions you’ll be asking. Get the full consent of the applicant, again in writing. Even if you use a background screening company to perform the check, you’re still responsible for getting an applicant’s approval before you start searching into his history.

Know Before You Go

If you’re about to launch a marketing campaign, be sure your small business is ready to handle the response. For instance, your local advertising might urge readers to call your company about a new product. If so, make sure your sales people are prepared to answer questions, quote prices and maybe even take orders. Or let’s say your direct mail campaign invites readers to visit your Web site to find out about a new service. Be sure your Web page is stocked with information about the new service you’re offering. And make that information easy to find.
