Nifty ideas you can use to build a better business

Hideaway Hotel

Before you book that hotel room online, you might want to make a call. Travel Web sites often quote you a room price plus applicable taxes, but ignore extra fees that hotels charge guests. Some hotels now stick guests with a $10 to $20 “gym” fee, even if you never step foot on a treadmill. Other hotels tack on fees for in-room coffee, newspapers delivered to your room and telephone calls to toll-free numbers. The additional charges can turn a good hotel deal into a costly overnight stay. But the only way you’ll know about these hidden fees is to call the hotel directly and ask.

Deal The Cards

The lowly business card could be your most under-used marketing tool. Too many small-business owners overlook the promotional opportunities of b-cards. Here are a few ways to put b-cards to work:

  • Drop a business card in every sales letter you send

  • Put one in every press release you distribute

  • Post them on every available bulleting board, from banks to restaurants

  • Leave a small stack of your cards on counters at dry cleaners and print shops

  • Include a card with every order you ship

  • Attach one (or more) to every sales presentation and job estimate you deliver
