Language Of Job Advertisements

Before you place that advertisement to attract new talent to your business, be aware of the words you use. Wording in ads can be used as evidence of discrimination against applicants. Here are a few words that can trip you up when writing an ad:

  • Don’t use salesman. Use salesperson.

  • Use waitperson instead of waiter.

  • Don’t state that the position requires a married couple. Use the term two-person job instead.

  • The description Gal Friday was long ago replaced with office manager.

Is A Roth IRA Right For You?

If you’re ready to start saving for retirement don’t overlook the Roth IRA. Although it isn’t the right choice for all entrepreneurs, most people are better off investing in a Roth IRA than in a traditional IRA.

Here’s a thumbnail sketch of the benefits you’ll find with a Roth IRA:

  • Meet certain requirements, and all earnings from a Roth IRA are tax free when you or your beneficiary withdraw them.

  • You’re not required to draw distributions on a Roth IRA at age 70½, so your earnings can continue to grow tax-free.

  • You can take certain early distributions without paying the early distribution penalty.

The disadvantage to a Roth IRA is that you can’t take tax deductions for the annual contributions you make.

Of course you don’t want to make an investment decision based on this quick review. So to get yourself up to speed on the pros and cons of Roth IRAs, check out these two Web sites:

Fairmark Press

Under “Tax Guides,” click on Roth IRA to find an overall guide that probably answers many of your basic questions. The Web site also offers a message board where you can ask questions about your specific situation.

Roth IRA Web Site

Rather than a guide, this site offers a huge base of information about Roth IRAs – from general interest to technical resources. You’ll find links to numerous articles, calculators, IRS regulations and other source material.

You may be a brilliant entrepreneur, but that doesn’t necessarily make you a top-notch people manager. Although you may now loathe some of the chores required in your business, you might also find that you hate even more the responsibilities of managing another person. Before you hire, know thyself.
