Getting Through A Disaster
Need help rebuilding your small business after Hurricanes Katrina or Rita? Turn to SCORE. SCORE has stepped up its outreach to the small-business community nationwide in response to the hurricanes.
Atlanta SCORE is helping Gulf Coast entrepreneurs by providing seven-day-a-week business counseling at three major evacuee centers outside Atlanta.
Other chapters, including Mobile SCORE and Baton Rouge SCORE, have increased their services.
The Web site, www.score.org, provides several important links for small-business owners affected by the hurricanes, including SBA Disaster Loan Assistance, the Federal Emergency Management Agency Application for Assistance, and Ask SCORE Online Business Advice. More than 1,200 SCORE online counselors can answer questions about disaster preparedness and recovery. Questions can be submitted 24/7 and answers come within 48 hours.
Feeling The Pinch?
America’s smallest firms bear the largest per employee burden of federal regulatory compliance costs. That’s the bottom line of a study released in September by the Office of Advocacy of the U.S. Small Business Administration. Other findings:
Firms with fewer than 20 employees annually spend $7,647 per employee to comply with federal regulations, compared with the $5,282 spent by firms with more than 500 employees
Small business faces a 45 percent greater burden than their larger business counterparts for regulatory compliance for economic, workplace, environmental and tax regulations
You can find the full study, “The Impact of Regulatory Costs on Small Firms,” at http://www.sba.gov/advo/research/rs264tot.pdf. And if you’d like to tell your federal legislators just what you think about the disproportionate regulatory burdens foisted on small businesses, go online to the Legislative Action Center of the National Association for the Self-Employed (NASE). The Web site is at http://advocacy.NASE.org. You can find out who your legislators are, compose an e-mail to them and send it with a click of your mouse.
