Article 1: The Rise Of E-Mail
How did we ever get anything done with
typewriters, clunky adding machines and the
pokey U.S. Postal Service’s snail mail?
Personal computers changed all that, forever.
But computers are nothing without the killer
applications that turn silicon chips and metal
boxes into mainstream business tools. The first
killer app was the spreadsheet, bringing
unimaginable calculating power to the desktop.
Then word processors, which overnight relegated
typewriters to the junk heap. Then the Internet,
not software per se, but it spread computer
uses’ horizons worldwide.
But by far the most extensive and ubiquitous
Internet killer app to date is e-mail,
instantaneous personal communication, anywhere,
anytime. Virtually everyone who goes online is
introduced to e-mail. For many, e-mail is
becoming virtually indispensable. New business
prospects are just as likely to ask for your
e-mail address as your street address.
E-mail already links nearly everyone who owns a
computer. And it promises to become ubiquitous
in the future.
Consider that for a minute. E-mail is used by
nearly everyone who goes online, which
increasingly is becoming everyone who has a
computer. Everyone.
What percentage of your target market remains
computer illiterate? Chances are, not many of
those you need to reach. And definitely there
will be fewer tomorrow.
What tremendous potential! Few mediums reach as
many people. And almost none reach them as
inexpensively. |
