Article 8: Veteran’s Business Development
Military veterans who need help with business training, counseling or seeking qualified mentors can turn to an SBA program especially designed for them. The Veterans Business Outreach Program (VBOP) provides entrepreneurial development services and referrals for eligible veterans who own or who are considering starting a small business. The services are free.
There are four participating SBA organizations that serve as Veterans Business Outreach Centers (VBOC), located in California, Texas, Florida and New York. Information about the programs can be accessed here: http://www.sba.gov/VETS/
These organizations provide services that include:
Pre-Business Plan Workshops - These workshops deal with the major issues of self-employment, including the Internet as a tool to develop and expand businesses. Each client works directly with a business counselor.
Concept Assessments - This service helps assess the veteran’s needs and requirements, which is particularly helpful for startups.
Business Plan Preparations – This service developes and maintains a five-year business plan, including determining the legal form for the business, equipment requirements and costs, structure, strategic planning, market analysis, financial and budget projections and funding requirements.
Comprehensive Feasibility Analysis - Veterans are helped to identify and analyze their business plan’s strengths and weaknesses, then make appropriate revisions.
Entrepreneurial Training and Counseling - Working with other SBA partners, this service includes training and counseling sessions specifically to disabled veteran entrepreneurs.
Mentorship - As appropriate, on-site visits and monthly reviews of financial statements are conducted to determine whether a business plan needs revision, or if its goals are being reached.
Other services - VBOCs provide help and training in international trade, franchising, Internet marketing, accounting and other areas.
