Small-Business Owner’s Guide To Government Resources
|
|
Article 1: Introduction To Resources
The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and The Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) cater in particular to startup businesses. Consider them like wise old uncles on whom you can rely for tips, tricks and knowledge to avoid pitfalls, to capitalize on opportunities and to develop business wisdom. Add to that a price that’s either low or free and you have a formula for business success.
Unfortunately, at first blush the SBA and SCORE appear like many government agencies: distant, large and complex. That can be intimidating. The situation is complicated in that the SBA, SCORE and affiliated agencies offer many overlapping services and programs.
One caveat: Government size standards define whether a business is small and therefore whether it is eligible for programs and preferences reserved for small business. Size standards vary according to type of business and industry, measured either by sales or by the number of employees.
Measure your own company at the Small Business Size Standards by using the NAICS Industry charts located here http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-idx. You can also get assistance by telephoning (800) 553-6847.
