Local Marketing
Article 5: Valpak Coupons

The familiar blue Valpak coupon envelopes have delivered neighborhood-by-neighborhood targeted marketing to nearly 50 million households and businesses across the U.S. since 1968. And now, thousands of online savings offers for local products and services are available at www.Valpak.com.

“When these work, they can work very well,” says Jeff Dobkin, a direct marketing consultant and the author of “How To Market A Product for Under $500” (Danielle Adams Publishing Company, 2003). “I had a client once who devoted his entire quarter’s marketing budget to Valpak because it was working so well for him.”

Valpaks generally mail in lots of 10,000, Dobkin explains, and businesses can buy specific ZIP codes and areas for $250 to $500 apiece. That makes Valpaks perfect for narrow, targeted marketing.

“The consensus is that Valpaks usually pay for themselves and they bring people to your business that might not otherwise have come,” says Dobkin.

Valpak coupons also tend to work best for businesses and products that are straightforward and easily understood – handyman services, clothing alteration shops and auto mechanics, for example.

With every Valpak coupon, you have to make an offer of some sort – like 50 percent off or buy one get, one free – Dobkin says, because people are looking for coupons and deals, not just ads.

In addition, you can make online offers available in conjunction with Valpak mailings. At Valpak.com, customers can easily find local offers for their city or ZIP code. Maps, distance and directions are available for most offers.

Dobkin advises that you tap the expertise of your Valpak salesperson for guidance in creating your coupon and choosing your mailing area.

“They have seen what works and what doesn’t, and it’s in their best interest to help you succeed.”
