Work Life Balance
Article 7: Make A Quick Getaway

You can often liberate yourself from the same old grind and restore your sense of freedom by simply varying your work schedule.

Sleep in one morning and arrive in your home office an hour later. Take off a couple of hours early one Friday afternoon and hit the movie matinee. Plan a long lunch with a friend who's not a colleague, client or contractor. Pick a place where you've never eaten before just to enjoy a change of scenery. And steer the conversation away from work topics.

Play with purpose. That's a phrase used to describe doing volunteer work for a few hours during the day. Call ahead and schedule your time with the organization of your choice. By making the promise, you're more likely to fulfill the obligation.

You can offer to deliver meals to homebound citizens during lunch. Or volunteer to drop by the local humane shelter twice a week for an hour. Walk the dogs. Pet the cats. Volunteer activities give you an excuse to play and contribute to your community at the same time. The dual reward is sweet satisfaction.
