Work Life Balance
Article 8: Lapse Into Relaxation

Stressful moments occur throughout the day. Deal with them as they happen and you'll prevent snapping your nerves.

"Momentarily stop. Literally stop in your tracks and quickly review what's going on," says Leslie Charles, author of Why Is Everyone So Cranky? "Ask yourself. What am I thinking? How is my body feeling right now? This kind of exercise not only helps raise your sense of awareness, but it also helps you monitor your thoughts. It lets you relieve your stress and tension before you hit critical mass."

Even a few minutes of de-stressing during the day makes a big impact. Take a 15-minute power nap or meditate for 20 minutes to lower your stress level. Hit the streets and get in a half hour walk to wake up your senses.

Registered music therapist Barry Bernstein, owner of Healthy Sounds in Kansas City, offers a variety of drumming programs for corporations. Bernstein says that drumming is “the healthiest, most accessible and fastest way to reconnect with ourselves.”

Okay, so you don’t see yourself beating a drum. Listen to music instead. Rap, rock, classical, the sound of ocean waves—whatever gives you the cue that you’re relaxing and having fun.

Try lighting an aromatherapy candle. The Olfactory Research Fund reports that the scent of vanilla enhances relaxation and calmness. Or take a whiff of a spiced apple fragrance, which can reduce your stress level and lower blood pressure. Lavender and jasmine can also help you unwind.

Or stare out a window and admire nature. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that just looking at nature can lower your blood pressure and reduce stress.

Don’t have a picturesque view of a sun-soaked beach out your office window? Don’t get stressed. Hang a poster of the Bahamas on your wall. Place a framed photo of Yellowstone National Park on your desk. Find a nature scene that soothes you and ponder it for a few minutes throughout the day.

Set up one corner of your office with a comfortable chair and a cozy reading lamp. When you need a little breather during the day, get out of your swivel chair and into your comfort corner. Kick off your shoes. Read the comics, a short story or just relax.
